Thank you for visiting my Cross Country Challange website. As most of you know I will be traveling across the United States this summer with the America by Bicycle touring company. We will be riding out of San Francisco, CA on Sunday June 3rd and pulling into Portsmouth, NH on Tuesday July 24th. The ride is slated for 52 days covering 3,836 miles through 13 of our great states. At last count there are 27 of us going from coast to coast with others just doing a leg or two of the tour. One of the riders joining me is my long lost brother, Jeff. For the last 10 years Jeff has been living in Melbourne, Australia where he ran his own business with his lovely fiancee Alicia. I refer to him as "long lost" since I have only seen him 3 times in the last 10 years. Jeff has less cycling experience than I do so this is a rather aggressive, or I should just be honest and say a very aggressive goal for the both of us.
Speaking of aggressive goals, did I mention that I am using this ride as a fund raiser for the American Cancer Society? I am attempting to raise $50,000 throughout the course of this ride to help fund the many great research projects, educational programs, patient support services offered by the American Cancer Society. Cancer is still the second leading cause of death in the United States with over 550,000 Americans losing their battle with cancer last year alone. Of those deaths approximately 170,000 can be attributed to tobacco use and approximately another 186,000 cancer deaths were due to poor nutrition, physical inactivity, and obesity. Education is a very important tool in the fight against cancer. Information offered by the American Cancer Society is vital to educating the public on topics such as: the various types of cancer, prevention techniques, treatment options, smoking cessation, and much more.
Please click on the American Cancer Society link to the left or call 1-800-ACS-2345 to learn more about what you can do to get involved, raise awareness, or promote a healthier lifestyle for yoursef and your loved ones. To make a secure online donation to help me reach my fund raising goal please click on the Team ACS Donation Site link to the left. All dontations are tax deductible and go to a great cause.
At this time I would also like to say a heartfelt thank you to everyone who has supported me through this experience so far. You have all been a tremendous help in many, many ways. You can continue to be a part of this experience by clicking on the "Daily Ride Journal" links. I will do my best to keep these journals updated with trip information, stories, and photos. I hope that you enjoy them.
